This year over six lakh students appeared for the first phase of National Eligibility
cum Entrance Test (NEET), a common medical entrance test for admissions to MBBS
and BDS courses across the country.
According to CBSE officials who conducted the test, over 6.67 lakh students had
registered for the exam. Of the total 4.7 lakh students who had registered for phase
II of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions to medical
colleges, around 70% reappeared for the test after surrendering their NEET phase-I
scores. This data from the CBSE indicates that majority of the students who appeared
for the phase-II, after the nationwide controversy over it, are the ones who wanted
to better their scores.
The number of fresh applicants registered for phase-II were a meagre 1.35 lakh -
30% of the total. This was after the Union Government issued an ordinance exempting
state-run medical colleges from admitting students through NEET.
